A sateen cotton has two predominant characteristics: sheen and smoothness. To achieve the satin-like finish, cotton undergoes a treatment, called mercerization, where the fibres are soaked in a bath of sodium hydroxide (i.e., lye) followed with an acid bath. The process originated during the mid-1800’s and was developed by John Mercer. Its soft touch is a result of the weaving process, four over and one under, which puts most of the threads on the surface. Sateen cotton makes for luxurious looking dress shirts.
