Date Movie Of The Week – The Invention Of Lying

October 5, 2009

The Invention Of Lying is a recently released movie starring Jenifer Garner and Ricky Gervais, who was also the director. It is a fantasy movie that takes place in a parallel world. Everything is otherwise the same to our reality, except everyone only tells the truth until lying is discovered by Gervais’ character. While hilarity is supposed to ensue, I have to admit I didn’t find it in this piece at all.  What I found was a second-rate movie taking shots and giving commentary on Christianity and the people who follow faith of any kind.  Taking a date, especially a first date, to a movie like this is a can be a risk. If either of you take faith a bit seriously, this movie may cross some lines that can extinguish any spark for the evening that would have otherwise ignited.

Rotten Tomatoes readers have rated the film with a 57% approval. Rolling Stone gave it 2.5 out of 4 stars. According to the New York Times:

…while the movie is a conceptual pip filled with quotable laughs and gentle pokes at religious faith at its most literal, it also looks so shoddy that you yearn for the camerawork, lighting and polish of his shows, like the original “The Office,” because, really, these days TV rarely looks this bad…
