Date Movie Pick This Week: Julie & Julia

August 14, 2009

Julie and Julia is a dual biography. Apple describes it best here:

Meryl Streep is Julia Child and Amy Adams is Julie Powell in writer-director Nora Ephron’s adaptation of two bestselling memoirs: Powell’s Julie & Julia and My Life in France, by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme. Based on two true stories, Julie & Julia intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends…until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

While I will be the first to admit that this movie is not my style, a number of people we know have seen this already and had good things to say, which leads me to offer this as a good date movie for the confident guy.

Rotten Tomatoes has it rated with a 75% approval (and a lot of the positive comments are by men). Rolling Stone and have both given it 4 out of 5. Entertainment Weekly has given it a B+. The general consensus is that Julia’s half of this dual biography is great while the other half is good but a little weak.

For this type of film, I suggest wearing a clean-fitting, classic look that highlights how you’re being more considerate and sensitive for taking her to this movie instead of District 9. Half the film harkens back to a time when, like now, men dressed well and paid attention to details. I recommend a 5 pocket trouser, brown casual shoes (not running shoes), a complementary sport shirt and a sport jacket; when put together, they’re a nice way to bridge the gap between a classic elegance and a more timely look.
