The Ugly Truth

The Ugly Truth stars Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler and is a romantic comedy about a macho chauvinistic guy educating an attractive colleague about men, specifically what they want and how to get them. Rotten Tomatoes has given the movie a 16% rating, saying that it’s following the formula too closely. Rolling Stone gave it half a star. The Washington Post a bit more generous, giving it 3.5/4 stars. Variety magazine was perhaps the most articulate about the movie:

“The Ugly Truth” is an arch, contrived, entirely predictable romantic comedy assembled with sufficient audience-friendly elements to put it over as both a good girls’ night attraction and a date-night lure raunchy enough to leave couples in the right mood afterward. As such, and with the easy-to-watch Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler as cat and dog who initially hate each other so much that love is the only possible result, Sony should expect to reap some far-from-ugly midsummer B.O. returns from this commercially calculated cocktail.

Going to a movie that is on the border between chick-flick and date movie AND on the border between calculated hit and horrible miss demands for a versatile outfit. If you find the movie as bad as some of the critics stated, you will want to walk out and take your date to a lounge or bar to make fun of the movie for a while. However, if you like it you’re going to be  at the theater for a couple of hours and then probably go for a drink; either way, jeans and a sport shirt with casual shoes (i.e. loafers) make sense. To switch things up, you may even wear a 5 pocket trouser in place of your favourite pair of jeans. A sport jacket would be optional and would depend more on the post movie venue than anything else.
